Hammerhead Sharks are aggressive hunters. Their odd heads are evolved to enhance their vision. The position of the eyes give to these sharks good binocular vision, and a 360 degree vision in the vertical plane. This mean that they can see above and below them at all times. Like all the other sharks, hammerheads have electroreceptory sensory pores called ampullae of Lorenzini. They help the sharks to sense electric fields in the water. Hammerheads have distributed these receptors over a wider area, and they are able to detect an electrical signal of half a billionth of volt.
This particular sense is very useful to sharks. Since muscle contractions produce an electrical field (although very weak), the shark can sense it and locate his prey.
The favorite meal of hammerheads are stingrays, which usually bury themselves under the sand. But thanks to his senses, an hammehead can detect a stingray even when it’s invisible.
Hammerheads usually swim in large groups during the day, but become solitary hunter at night.
